💵 Youpla, (formerly trading as Aboriginal Community Benefit Fund or ACBF), is a funeral insurance provider, which sold itself with Aboriginal imagery, messaging and staff over several decades, despite not having any Indigenous owners for the majority of that time.
📢 Earlier this year, CAWLS shared the news that the company became insolvent, leaving 17,000 Indigenous families with nothing after many had paid tens of thousands of dollars towards policies meant to guarantee them a dignified cultural funeral, also known as ‘Sorry Business’.
CAWLS have seen a number of clients affected… Women who thought that they were doing the right thing by their families by not leaving the burden of funeral costs on them, have now been left in the dark… not to mention the stress of no longer having any piece of mind, should the worst happen… 😞
Mid year, CAWLS stood in solidarity with over 100 major community and Indigenous organisations and assist in writing an open letter to both major political parties, calling for urgent action, to prevent Indigenous policyholders nearing the end of their lives from being stranded ✊
❌ If you had a policy with ACBF or YOUPLA, you should have cancelled this direct with your bank by now… if not, we encourage families to do this immediately.
📱 If you are having trouble cancelling your direct debit, contact CAWLS for a Financial Counselling Appointment for assistance.
