A long term victim of domestic violence, ‘Phoebe’, was wrongly diagnosed, given antipsychotic drugs and made to continue to live with her abusive husband, despite having a court-issued interim intervention order against him. A survey led by Royal Melbourne Hospital’s family safety team found it was not uncommon for frontline health practitioners to have little or no confidence in responding to family violence… As in Phoebe’s case, the consequences can be severe…

Many women’s legal services around the country run ‘Specialist Domestic and Family Violence Units which work closely with hospitals and health clinics to build capacity to identify and respond to family violence.
