🗣 Recent changes to Tasmanian legislation mean that victim-survivors of sexual assault now have the right to publicly identify themselves. The #LetHerSpeak campaign, instrumental in advocating for these changes, centres on restoring agency to victim-survivors so they can tell their own stories without fear or stigma.
Earlier this year, Northern Territory Women’s Legal Services provided a joint submission and evidence before the Legislative Scrutiny Committee, advocating for changes to the Territory’s equivalent “gag laws”. Whilst the final debate in Parliament has been postponed as a consequence of COVID-19, the Committee’s report details its strong support for such amendments to the legislation.
If passed by Parliament, these long-awaited and critical amendments will ensure the justice system does not perpetuate a culture of protecting perpetrators.
Victim-survivors deserve the legal right to take back control of their narrative 🙏💚
