Responding to issues and offering a referral

Online referral to CAWLS
At least one question has been ticked which indicates a referral to a legal service could be offered.

If the discussion indicates there may be legal or financial concerns, offer a referral to legal service.

“It sounds like it would be worth having a further discussion about this with a lawyer and/or a financial counsellor

Do you want me to connect you with the women’s legal service, and help arrange a time for them to see you?”

NOTE: If the discussion relates to any urgent safety concerns and/or child protection concerns, consider accessing our drop-in service by calling CAWLS on 1800 684 055 or attending our office during business hours. If you are a staff member at Alice Springs Hospital, you may also have the option of an urgent verbal referral through the Health Justice Partnership/Domestic Violence Unit program (see Social Work if you do not have the direct contact details), and be aware of the impact of any potential discharge plans.

There are four legal assistance services in Central Australia and the Barkly:
  • CAWLS – Central Australian Women’s Legal Service: (08) 8952 4055
  • CAAFLU – Central Australian Aboriginal Family Law Unit: (08) 8953 6355
  • NT Legal Aid: 1800 019 343
  • NAAJA – North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency: 1800 636 079

Use this form to make a referral to CAWLS. CAWLS will then contact the client.

A list of all the ticked questions will go to CAWLS as part of this referral.
