📣 On 27 July, the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service was invited by the Honourable Chansey Paech MLA, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, to attend a reception for Grace Tame at Parliament House, Darwin.
We were inspired by Ms Tame speaking about the changes to the law and what it means for victims in the Northern Territory ⚖️
📖 The Northern Territory is the last jurisdiction in the country to remove the word “relationship” from the Child Sexual Offences Act. The change is in line with recommendations from the Child Sexual Abuse Royal Commission.
Other changes to the bill include 👇
▫️ Introducing a new offence of grooming a child;
▫️ Criminalising stealthing;
▫️ Removing the ability for child sex offenders to rely on good character references during sentencing.
🗣 When speaking in Darwin, and subsequently reported by the ABC, Ms Tame stated, “when you have the language in the law itself, we have the community able to better understand what it is.”
