📍 CAWLS lawyers Imogen and Katie recently attended the ‘Small Steps: Safer Workplaces Sexual Harassment’ Conference in Nipaluna/Hobart, hosted by the Women’s Legal Service Tasmania Inc.
🗣️ The two-day event brought together a diverse group of legal professionals, advocates, policymakers and others to explore critical issues surrounding workplace sexual harassment and its prevention.
Sessions covered a wide range of topics and provided valuable opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing. Highlights included:
💡 A presentation by Andrew Mitchell of the Lutruwita Sex Worker Project, which focused on the importance of including and amplifying the voices of sex workers in conversations around workplace safety.
💡 A masterclass by Kate Eastman AM SC, providing invaluable guidance on best practices for CLC lawyers, small firms, and sole practitioners managing sexual harassment cases.
💡 A powerful discussion with Nala Mansel of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, who emphasised the importance of meaningful action in showing solidarity with First Nations communities, beyond simply acknowledging country.
💡 An informative session by Gabrielle Marchetti, Principal Solicitor at JobWatch, who provided an engaging overview of recent and notable updates in sexual harassment law.
💡 Research presented by Sharmilla Bargon and Regina Featherstone, examining the misuse of non-disclosure in workplace sexual harassment settlements since the Respect@Work Report.
The conference also provided a vital space for connecting with fellow lawyers from community legal centres across the country, sharing experiences and strengthening our collective approach to addressing workplace sexual harassment 👥
