📅 Today is Day 11 of the ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’.
UN Women have put together a list of 10 simple steps we can all make a difference, safely and impactfully.
Step 9 : Hold each other accountable
This often feels like a tough one – just like bystander intervention – but there are resources out there to help you avoid collusive language and promote accountability ✊
🤔 What is non-collusive language? And why is it especially important in family violence matters?
A perpetrator looks for validation of their behaviour from many sources, including family and social connections 😣 Collusion occurs when attempts to avoid responsibility are reinforced by others. It can be easy to be unwittingly drawn into a perpetrator’s narrative, which can involve anything from denying actions to blaming the victim’s behaviour… but when we clearly reject these invitations to collude, we promote accountability and the idea of violence as a choice.
