š Today is Day 11 of the ā16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violenceā.
UNĀ Women have put together a list of 10 simple steps we can all make a difference, safely and impactfully.
Step 9 : Hold each other accountable
This often feels like a tough one ā just like bystander intervention – but there are resources out there to help you avoid collusive language and promote accountability ā
š¤ What is non-collusive language? And why is it especially important in family violence matters?
A perpetrator looks for validation of their behaviour from many sources, including family and social connections š£ Collusion occurs when attempts to avoid responsibility are reinforced by others. It can be easy to be unwittingly drawn into a perpetratorās narrative, which can involve anything from denying actions to blaming the victimās behaviour… but when we clearly reject these invitations to collude, we promote accountability and the idea of violence as a choice.
